after NetBSD 5.0 and OpenBSD 4.5 is releasing past few days.. now it FreeBSD 7.2! found out it already uploaded in official ftp site yesterday ( not yet announced ) then quickly I'm downloading the DVD iso!
expecting to finish next few hours.. my 1MB DSL is f** slow.. and seems like i'll upgrade my other box ( onboard VIA Samuel processor ) to this! just last week I've patched it to 7.1-release-p5... :)

Later i got stupid prob with this Canon LBP-800 that refuse to print ( isung old parallel port ) and i thought it's the software prob.. so i attach it to this box and 1st try to print via text mode for lpr thingy but it keep saying /dev/lp0 is busy..
so i try use CUPS, but i need to install the web browsers 1st ( my initial plan is just use the text-mode only ).. so i just let the plain X GUI ( no KDE, No GNOME, sawfish etc2 ) and install the firefox via pkg_add...
testing CUPS and it's reveal that some problem with the printer.. warghhh ( i check on dmesg, the printer is detected and match.. use IRQ7 )..
so now it's the printer biol... so i need to sent it for fix ( i just buy a new toner!! fux!! )

FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE Announcement
The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE. This is the second release from the 7-STABLE branch which improves on the functionality of FreeBSD 7.0 and introduces some new features. Some of the highlights:
The ULE scheduler is now the default in GENERIC kernels for amd64 and i386 architectures. The ULE scheduler significantly improves performance on multicore systems for many workloads.
Support for using DTrace inside the kernel has been imported from OpenSolaris. DTrace is a comprehensive dynamic tracing framework.
A new and much-improved NFS Lock Manager (NLM) client.
Boot loader changes allow, among other things, booting from USB devices and booting from GPT-labeled devices.
The cpuset(2) system call and cpuset(1) command have been added, providing an API for thread to CPU binding and CPU resource grouping and assignment.
KDE updated to 3.5.10, GNOME updated to 2.22.3.

FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE is now available for the amd64, i386, ia64, pc98, powerpc, and sparc64 architectures.
FreeBSD 7.1 can be installed from bootable ISO images or over the network; the required files can be downloaded via FTP or BitTorrent as described in the sections below. While some of the smaller FTP mirrors may not carry all architectures, they will all generally contain the more common ones, such as i386 and amd64.
Dunno what the hell is goin' on, all my NetBSD box is showing error while compiling for patch, some is happen during compiling kernel, other is during "distribution".. this problem takes few days to test+ redo, lots of fetch/refecth src from cvs server, using cvs and cvsup, lots of cleaning /usr/obj + /usr/tools+ make clean and recompile, even it's stress me out so I've setup other boxes as testing, including VmWare to do same thing all over and compare..
Just setup my new NetBSD 3.1 ( fux the 4.0 is stuck, have some probs with ACPI ) and patched to 3.1_STABLE, so now this pentium2 400 is used for testing..

Today i"m updating my FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE-p5 and NetBSD 3.1_STABLE box since there is security/bugfix patch for it, released on 24th... anyway i'm doing it regularly too..
Sysadmins, please make this as your practice.. always check for bugfix/patch everyday.. then patch it ASAP, if not your box could poosibly been hacked soon!

About the NetBSD 4.0.1 Release
The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce that update 4.0.1 of the
NetBSD operating system is now available. NetBSD 4.0.1 is the first
security/critical update of the NetBSD 4.0 release branch. This
represents a selected subset of fixes deemed critical in nature for
stability or security reasons, no new features have been added.
NetBSD 4.0.1 runs on 54 different system architectures featuring 17
machine architectures across 17 distinct CPU families, and is being
ported to more. The NetBSD 4.0.1 release contains complete binary
releases for 51 different machine types, with the platforms amigappc,
bebox and ews4800mips released in source form only. Complete source
and binaries for NetBSD 4.0.1 are available for download at many sites
around the world. A list of download sites providing FTP, AnonCVS,
SUP, and other services is provided at the end of this announcement;
the latest list of available download sites may also be found at
http://www.NetBSD.org/mirrors/. We encourage users who wish to install
via a CD-ROM ISO image to download via BitTorrent by using the torrent

CVE-2008-1657), has been fixed by applying patches from upstream.
o NetBSD-SA2008-006, integer overflow in strfmon(3) function
(CVE-2008-1391), has been fixed.

(CVE-2007-3108), has been fixed.
o NetBSD-SA2008-009, BIND cache poisoning (CVE-2008-1447 and CERT
VU#800113), has been fixed by updating BIND to 9.4.2-P2. Note
there are two related changes to this advisory:
o The default behavior of ipfilter's Port Address Translation
has been changed to using random port allocation rather than
sequential mappings, to avoid decreasing the randomness of
source ports used for DNS queries which affects the BIND
cache poisoning problem.
o A `query-source' statement, which could allow the BIND cache
poisoning attack, has been commented out in the default
named.conf(5) file.
o NetBSD-SA2008-010, malicious PPPoE discovery packet can overrun a
kernel buffer (CVE-2008-3584), has been fixed.
o NetBSD-SA2008-011, ICMPv6 MLD query (CVE-2008-2464), has been
fixed.
o NetBSD-SA2008-012, Denial of Service issues in racoon(8)
(CVE-2008-3652), has been fixed by upgrading ipsec-tools to
release 0.7.1. Note this also fixes CVE-2008-3651.
o upcoming NetBSD-SA2008-013, IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocol
routing vulnerability (CVE-2008-2476), has been fixed.
o upcoming NetBSD-SA2008-014, remote cross-site request forgery
attack issue in ftpd(8) (CVE-2008-4247), has been fixed.
o upcoming NetBSD-SA2008-015, remove kernel panics on IPv6
connections (CVE-2008-3530), has been fixed.
Note: NetBSD-SA2008-007 and advisories prior to NetBSD-SA2008-004
don't affect NetBSD 4.0.

o Fix a buffer overrun which could crash a FAST_IPSEC kernel.
o tcpdump(8): fix CVE-2007-1218, CVE-2007-3798 and CAN-2005-1278 in
base-tcpdump.
o Fix a buffer overflow of PCF font parser in X11 libXfont library
(CVE-2008-0006).
o Fix a buffer overflow of Tektronix Hex Format support in binutils
(CVE-2006-2362).
o machfb(4) and voodoofb(4): introduce two missing
KAUTH_GENERIC_ISSUSER checks in the mmap(2) code.
Networking
o Update root.cache to 2008020400 version.
o Fix IP packet forwarding code to make sure to send a reasonable
fragment size when IPsec is configured.
o Fix a bug in TCP SACK code which causes data corruption.
o Fix an rc.d(8) script for amd(8) not to shutdown gracefully since
it seems to cause problems for more people than the old (also
broken) behavior.
o ftpd(8): fix and reorganize PAM support.
Libraries
o Pthread support of BIND has been disabled for future binary
compatibility after removal of the scheduler activations.
o Fix coredump of gdtoa (conversion between binary floating-point
and ASCII string) functions on out of memory conditions.
Drivers
o fxp(4): fix random pool corruption and hangup problems.
o wd(4): handle more LBA48 bug quirks on some Hitachi's SATA/IDE
drives.
Miscellaneous
o Disable a NULL pointer check in zlib for standalone programs. This
fixes errors on loading a gzipped kernel (including installation
kernels) on several ports (news68k etc.) whose kernels are loaded
at address zero.
o awk(1): bring back an accidentally removed fix to allow escape of

Well just feel need to share some of the BSD's knowledge. What u need to have is NetBSD 4.0 cd ( the shot is been made from 4.0-RC3 ).. the image maybe slightly smaller, but u can click for larger image.. so now just pop-up the cd and boot.. installation language is in english ( default )..
keyboard normally is autodetected, so just hit the "enter" button
yes confirm that u want to install NetBSD on the harddisk
just choose "yes" and continue, hit "enter"
HDD is detected, it labelled as wd0, confirm? yes then hit "enter"
Choose full installation ( FYI it's not used up so much space of your HDD ). Hit "enter"
hard disk is autodetected, normally no need to change anything, just hit "enter"
some options; u can choose for use whole HDD or partially ( maybe shared with some other unixes/BSD/linux/win ) but for this case we use all of the HDD space
for this just choose b: use existing partition sizes
choose default ( the easiest way ) but I recommended to select for "/" the rest of the diskspace ( here shown swap is already set for 128MB, u can increase if u like to ). So u can edit the parameter for "/" partition to 39077 MB. just select the line of / and enter, the secondary menu will appear..
u can edit in here if u want to, more details about fstype, mount point, toggle bootable etc.. i recommend to leave it as default and select "partition are ok"
accept the partition size after u decided.
put the name on your system, anything u like..
HDD is formatting to BSD-type filesystem ( UFS/FFS )
use default, bios console
select the progress bar ( default )
since we install via CD/DVD, then choose CD-ROM/DVD. However basically from the old days, we can choose to install it remotely from ftp site, http, NFS shares, Floppy ( wow! ), and other including MS-DOS partition, magnetic tape, serial null cable ( for "headless" system ) etc.. see how much flexible the NetBSD (and other BSD's too)
system will prompt the device/location and the path of sets.. default u no need to change anything, just select to "continue"
The installation is kick-off.. wait until it finished!
tadaaaa.. finished.. then continue for some little final touch..
choose your timezone... here i choose "Asia/Kuala_Lumpur"
encryption; choose anything suitable for u, even default is ok.. mine just choose "blowfish"
root password.. set it or leave it blank ( but later u need to set it for security purpose dude! )
shell to choose, default is ok, but mine choose "ksh", if u not sure, just select default
Installation of NetBSD 4.0 is complete!!!!
U'll prompt back to the 1st main menu. Choose "reboot the computer". Make sure u remove the installation CD, and let the system boot from your HDD
YESS! it's booted now...
when u're at login prompt, login root and password that u created before..
so now your NetBSD system is ready to serve! configure it, hack it anything u wish to unleash the power of NetBSD!
FYI basic full install is just taking up small space ( told ya before rite? ) around 355MB only :)!!
